Big heavy loads of concrete are too much for most shelving units. If you get the more robust shelving units then you will find that they can hold 600 to 800 lbs of product per level. However, that still does not account for the size of the concrete bags. Most of these shelving units can only hold one to two concrete bags which is not what you need. You need a system that can hold more than that or that can store the product in a stacked or vertical way. If you are called on to supply something as important as concrete then you need to be ready to store and deliver it in great quantities.
What do you need? You need pallet racks. Pallet racks can hold up to 2500 lbs per level. It can hold more but that is the most common type you will find in the marketplace. In fact, if you try to get a used pallet rack then, more often than not, you will be looking at a pallet rack that holds 2500 lbs per level. You may be wondering if they can hold more than one or two that the more robust shelving system we mentioned earlier. The truth is that pallet rack levels are adjustable to what you need. If you need more room then you can get more room. It is important to note that there is a limit to how high you can stack your product. However, it is more of a local government rule case than a physical limitation. There are several factors that weigh into this but you can have the company who supplies you the pallet rack help you figure out how high you can stack.
If you have a lot of concrete bags on pallet racks or on pallets in your pallet racks then you will probably use a forklift to load and unload them. The only problem with a forklift is the possibility that they will make contact with your pallet rack. If they make contact with your pallet rack then your rack could get damaged. The damage will cause instability. Instability is dangerous for you, your employees, and your customers. Therefore, it makes sense to protect your pallet racks from collisions. The item or items you need to do this are column guards. Column guards cover your pallet rack and protect them from damage. Of course, if the speed is great enough then they will not protect your racks as well. However, if it is a normal speed at which a forklift would operate in your warehouse then they will, likely, be good to go.
