Pallet Rack Installs - DIY or Professional? |
Posted: August 4, 2020 |
In general, pallet rack install services have not been used by most warehouse managers. It is because it is viewed as an expensive investment when they consider the fact that they, the company buying the rack, can probably install the rack themselves. What most warehouse owners fail to realize that it is really an investment worth making. Yes, even a small warehouse can install a simple pallet rack if and when it has the right space for it. Yes, you can purchase a rack from your local hardware store and install it yourself, if that is what you want to do. Keep in mind that rack may not pass the level of inspection from a local government since it is not truly an industrial-grade solution. It also, probably, lacks the needed seismic calculations for your area of business as well. A fact that your local government is highly unlikely to gloss over, However, that's not really the best solution for most warehouse environments because it takes a lot of time and energy to build and install these types of racks.
In today's warehouse, however, there is a simple solution for that very same problem. You get a professional outfit to put up your new metal-based racks. Yet, you could still go the other way if you really wanted to do so. You don't have to be a professional, nor do you have to invest in expensive equipment and materials to install a pallet rack. Many people feel as if a small warehouse will do fine with a simple wood pallet rack, made out of pallet board and aluminum or copper pipes, which is quite affordable. However, there are several reasons why this is a bad idea. The first reason is that you will not be able to store as highly as possible because your racks are made of wood. They are a fire hazard to most local governments and they will do what they can to mitigate that risk by telling you to keep your racks under a certain level or risk fines. Also, wood does not tend to be as strong as metal racks. Therefore, you can store less on the shelves. A lot of downsides due to the fact that you wanted to save money by avoiding the professional installation of a metal rack. Honestly, this choice could end up costing you more over the long run in money and in headaches having to do with future operations. For other warehouses, warehouse storage installation is done right in the backroom area where they are most often used. Most warehouse owners can afford to pay a company that installs pallets for them, which would help speed up the process.
There is a downside to warehouse storage installation, however, and that is the weight factor. If you buy a metal rack, you will have to keep the items on it, which means you need a lot of shelves and racks for your warehouse. This makes the racks quite heavy to move around unless you make them mobile via the use of specially made caster wheels for pallet racks. Keep in mind that this does limit the level at which you can stack vertically. Obviously, if the rack moves around then extra height can make it much more unstable if you are pushing it around. You will have to determine what you want in your business and make appropriate decisions around those facts.
For warehouse storage installation, it is best to find someone that has experience installing pallet racks. There are some companies that will actually make the racks for you and will also install them on your warehouse wall. However, this is quite expensive, and not everyone can afford it.
For the majority of warehouse owners, warehouse storage installation will only require a few tools and a little bit of patience. If you plan to get a commercial quality pallet rack, it will save you money over the long haul. When you compare the cost of purchasing a new rack versus the cost of a new set of pallets, you'll find that buying a new one is more affordable in the long run. If you have a well-made pallet rack coming to you then it makes sense to also invest in professional installation. It saves your employees from the dangers of installing the rack and it makes sure that they are installed correctly which saves them from injuries in the future.
