Homeowners and even renters all throughout the Portland Metro Area enjoy gardening, and this is probably because we have a pretty good climate in terms of outdoor growing for most of the year. The wet winters are great for planting seeds and watching them naturally sprout up each spring, and on this article we’re going to give you some tips in terms of beginning your sustainable, at-home garden. We’re very fortunate to have partnered up with Dennis 7 Dees, a Portland garden center, to help us compile this list of 5 essential tips, so take it from the experts in that these tips are what you need to know when it comes to starting your own sustainable garden! 1. Test your property’s soil This is always the first step you should take when it comes to beginning an at-home garden in your backyard, and it’s typically very easy and affordable to utilize these soil test kits. You’ll be looking to see if you have acidic or high-alkaline soil on your property, which will help you add the right amounts of fertilizer and compost as you’re initiating your seeding. It’s also important to ensure that you’re preparing your soil for the specific type of plant or food product that you’re hoping to grow, because some plants grow better in balanced pH, while other prefer acidic soil. 2. Companion plants This is really important as you’re preparing your sustainable garden, because doing your due diligence in terms of researching which plants grow well next to each other can ultimately help you in terms of enriching your soil and developing a root system that will flourish for years to come. A good example of this is planting basil next to tomatoes, and this combination works well because basil develops tomato taste and helps deter pesky flies and mosquitoes. 3. Don’t forget about flowers! Everyone in Portland knows that flowers grow INCREDIBLE here, and this is partly due to the winter rain and the overall soil composition in this area of Oregon. You can always consider edible flowers if you’re thinking about utilizing the entirety of your garden for kitchen purposes, and some common edible flowers in home gardens include pink jasmine, borage, and nasturtium. Flowers like sweet alyssum and yarrow will bring bees into your garden, which can enrich your plants via cross-pollination. Some edible flowers that bees are attracted to include lavender and rosemary. 4. Composting Compost is crucial for any sustainable home garden, no matter where you are! Utilizing your food scraps and a lot of other organic matter can become incredible fertilizer for your garden! 5. Mulch Mulch is always a good component of any sustainable garden, and this is because mulch does a wonderful job in terms of cutting down weeds and supporting your garden’s soil via moisture retention. Mulch also does a great job at protecting the root system within your garden, so it always makes a lot of sense to utilize mulch as a means to protect the longevity of your home garden!
